The danger of plastic waste to the environment has been long-recognized. Each year, approximately 8 million metric tonnes of plastic waste enter the ocean. Furthermore, nearly 90% of all of the manufactured plastic in existence today will not be recycled, as it is too inefficient for businesses to recycle single-use plastics such as nappies and straws. Moreover, countless aquatic animals have been found dead, their stomachs jammed with plastic, and microplastics are now contaminating the soil, air, and even our drinking water. But, luckily, some action is being taken to fight what is rapidly becoming one of the world’s greatest polluters.

The issue of plastic waste is complex, and many believe that a “comprehensive and coordinated approach” is required to solve it. Subsequently, some countries have adopted measures such as setting higher standards for plastic production and enhancing public awareness of plastic waste issues. In addition, numerous government campaigns have been launched in support of reducing the amount of plastic that is thrown away, such as offering a charge for plastic bags in supermarkets and encouraging waste reduction and recycling. Plus, many companies have started to restrict or completely stop using certain plastic materials in their production processes.

Clearly, there is an urgent need to drastically reduce the amount of plastic waste that is created, not only to save animals’ lives, but also to protect public health. Therefore, governments, businesses and individuals should all work together to ensure that plastic can be used, and eventually recycled, more responsibly. Above all, people must have a greater understanding and awareness of the dangers of plastic waste, and how we can work together to reduce its negative impact.
