英语四级题型结构
Writing is an important component in the National College English Test Band Four and Band Six, making up 15% of the total assessment. Tests are conducted for 30 minutes and the topics are familiar to students. The corresponding word number for Band Four consists of 120-180 words and Band Six 150-200 words.
To accommodate the changes in the social needs for college students’ English listening ability in a new environment, the National Committee of College English Test Band Four and Band Six started adjusting its listening questions in the examination since June,2016. The adjustments included abolishing short dialogues, short passages dictation as well as adding short news stories speaking (three paragraphs) and other parts remain the same.
The reading comprehension segment is made up of 1 long passage and 3 short passages. The skill it tests is understanding the main idea, important details, comprehensive analysis, inference as well as guessing the meaning of words from the context. This components comprises of 35% of the total score, where the long passage produces 10% and short passages 25%. The time allotted for it is 40 minutes.
The length of the long passages for Band Four and Six are approximately 1000 words and 1200 words respectively with a student’s rate of 100 words/minute and 120 words/minute. After the passage, there are 10 sentences which need to be found in the corresponding passage. Some paragraphs can correspond to two sentences and some may not have any correspondences.
The short passages comprise of two multiple-choices question and one word filling section. The length of the first two sections for Band Four and Six are 300-350 words and 400-450 words; the last one being 200-250 words and 250-300 words respectively. For the multiple choices passages, contender are required to choose the best answer from four given options according to their understanding of the passage. The word filling section asks participants to fill in the blanks with the correct word given after they read the short passage.
Translation tests students’ ability in expressing their thoughts in English, making up 15% of the total score. The time allotted for it is 30 minutes and the type of test is the passage translation from Chinese to English with contents including history, culture, economy and social progress.
